Where is Flatheim located, and how do you get there?

Flatheim is located in Viksdalen, halfway between Balestrand and Førde and surrounded by the fjords Sognefjorden, Dalsfjorden and Førdefjorden. It sits along the National Tourist Route Gaularfjellet. You can get here by car, motorcycle or bicycle. The area offers magnificent views of mountains, rivers, waterfalls and lakes. Flatheim is easily accessible for travelers crossing Gaularfjellet on Route 613.

It is also easy to get here by express boat from Bergen to Balestrand, and from there take a taxi, rent a car, or arrange transport with the hosts at Flatheim.

Why is Flatheim perfect for motorcycle travelers/bike travelers?

Flatheim is located right next to the National Tourist Route Gaularfjellet, one of the most spectacular motorcycle routes in Norway. Here you get safe parking, peaceful surroundings, good food and drink, and short distances to winding mountain roads, waterfalls and a wide selection of hiking trails. Flatheim is an excellent base for scenic rides and mountain hikes along the Gaular watercourse.

What kind of mountain hikes can you take from Flatheim?

Flatheim is an ideal starting point for hiking in the mountains and along the protected Gaular watercourse. There is a large selection of summit hikes and traditional farm trails. Fossestien—the Waterfall Trail—runs along rivers, waterfalls and lakes, and a number of summit hikes are within easy reach when staying at Flatheim. It is also a short distance to Fjordkysten Regional and Geopark, a UNESCO Global Geopark. The hosts will help you find hikes that match your fitness level and the time you have available.

What can you experience near Flatheim?

Flatheim has its own small riverside spa area with a sauna, wood-fired hot tub and a small pavilion. The bravest guests can take a dip in the river almost all year round. In the surrounding area along the National Tourist Route Gaularfjellet (fv. 613) you’ll find large, beautiful waterfalls, swimming spots, fishing opportunities, architecture and cultural heritage sites.

A short drive takes you to “Utsikten” on Gaularfjellet—one of the most photographed viewpoints in Norway. The bridge across Likholefossen, known as “The Silver Bridge,” is also nearby. The Mirage installation on Gaularfjellet is an exciting attraction. Balestrand, with its Swiss-style and dragon-style villas, is within easy reach. Flatheim is located along the National Tourist Route Gaularfjellet, Route 613, which is an extension of Highway 14. The hotel is open all year. Gaularfjellet Road is usually closed from mid-December until May 1st; during this period Flatheim can only be reached from the Sunnfjord side.

Flatheim also welcomes groups for corporate gatherings, friend trips and family celebrations. During winter you can often experience snow, and the area offers good conditions for skiing and winter activities.
